Repair and modifications.

Its difficult to photograph your own boat looking its best, yet it is easy to photograph everyone else’s boat, but shown below is how my yacht, the Ballerina 2 looked at April in 2007 after extensive repair and modifications. The first picture is how she was after launch, all clean and fresh. The second picture shows her with the mast up, all ready for the open sea.

The full repair story of 2006, and the full modifications story of 2007 have been compiled and formatted into a musical slideshow. They are completely free, so just click on either the above  links or the photos direct below this paragraph. They are in WMV format as will on almost all media players. Windows Media Player and REAL Player for example works fine, and should open when you click the link. If not you could right click and select “save target as” to download the full files. The are large at about 40MB but I am sure you will be not be disappointed but rather impressed, even for the sake of background music.

2006 keel bilge repair (8)02

uPhoto-0001 (39)

This is how the boat looked in 2006, and what follows is how she got there. In 2006 the back end was fully repaired and restored. The project started of as a simple refreshment, but ended up a full scale restoration exercise, but to the cost of missing the start of the sailing season, but it was worth it, 2006 was an excellent sailing year for us.

This is how the boat looked in 2007, and what follows is how she got there. In 2007 it was decided to modified the front end, at the expense of the appearance being outwith the Ballerina 1 style. This was done for practical purposes rather than cosmetic, and to hell with tradition. The boat is now more comfortable, in fact the original design was very limited in its practical use.

Bulk heads ripped out and replaced.

Roof fully replaced.

Centre bulk head was the only start point, it had to be ripped out and replaced before anything could be done. ideally this would be the last task as the cabin was used to store tools and machinery, but every measurement and support for the reconstruction was taken from this bulk head.

It was difficult to predict the actual state of the roof, so in doubt, I replaced it in full using marine plywood. It is actually an easier job than it looks, although the screwing in of the screws and the trimming of the ends was rather tedious. The roof also needed support from underneath just to ensure safety.

The rear blukhead was difficult, not only did it need patched up, but I sandwiched it between two sheets of acrylic, to ensure a water tight seal. This was necessary as the engine sits in a well inside the boat. Any leaks here could be very serious

The frame for the front is constructed. It looks simple enough, but it took a lot of thought to construct. Some of the struts, although you cannot see them, had 9 different angled sawcuts.

Bulk head patched but double butted with acrylic.

Frame in place for front extension.

keel bilge sailing yacht MODIFICATION (7)

Seats and Decking fully replaced.

Plywood sides and windows complete and fillled.

All seats were replace with marine plywood, and filled in to ensure a water tight seal before painting. The deck plate was remade, but so was its supports. This part caused some problems sealling the deck, water always manages to get under the deck unless all gaps are found and sealled.

It in now taking shape. All the marine plywood sides are fitted and sealled. As an extra, the sides were painted with waterproof, cascamite glue prior to painting. It was suggested to replace all the deck sides, but this was outside this years project, and they were not to badly worn.

All in all, work well done. The boat is totally transformed from the origonal, but I am not one for for tradition, but functionality. In fact, given the chance I will sell it and buy a GRP model. One thicg for sure I know exactly how it is built and how it can be repaired.
