You need to ask yourself some questions if you own a boat or thinking about it.

1. Can I own a yacht? Could I learn to sail?

The blunt answer in most cases is yes, if you meet certain criteria.

2. What are the specifications of your boat? What would I prefer?

Truthfully, what do I really need?

3. Can I expect much maintenance, repair or modification work?

See what I have to put up with.

4. Can I do it on my own, or with little help, or with a team?

See my crew, (or Rogues Gallery).

1. Can I own a yacht? Could I learn to sail?

There are many good reasons to own a boat. Its fun, it’s sporting, it’s romantic and it’s adventurous. It bonds family and friends together for special memories. There’s that irresistible pull of the ocean that says, “Let’s go!” And, of course, there’s a certain prestige in owning a well maintained yacht.

2. What are the specifications of your boat? What would I prefer?

What are the actual sizes and weights of your boat? Do you want bigger, well most of us do, but can you handle it. Would a larger yacht be too much for you? This is not such an obvious answer as you may think. My car, for instance is insured to tow a trailer 28 feet in length under the standard policy. If the length of my boat and trailer was to increase one foot, the additional insurance cost would be hefty. Determine carefully the difference between what you want, and what you can comfortable handle.

3. Can I expect much maintenance, repair or modification work?

ts difficult to photograph your own boat, with its full set of sails up, looking its best, although it is easy to photograph everyone else’s boat, but shown below is how my yacht, the Ballerina 2 looked at April in 2007 after extensive repair and modifications. What is like after three months in the harbour? Has it deteriorated much, the answer is yes, very must so. What repair work was needed after its first year in our waters? What modifications were needed to improve its sailing potential?

What started as a small lead, ended up in a major construction.

4. Can I do it on my own, or with little help?

Unless you have a small boat, then you will need help. Not constantly but every now and then, but when you need help, the more the merrier. Fortunately a boat can attract people. I feel that the people who helped me need some kind of recognition, and I do so by including their photos in this website. Ok it is a token, but a token of appreciation none the less.

The full repair story of 2006, and the full modifications story of 2007 have been compiled and formatted into a musical slideshow. They are completely free, so just click on either the above  links or the photos direct below this paragraph. They are in WMV format as will on almost all media players. Windows Media Player and REAL Player for example works fine, and should open when you click the link. If not you could right click and select “save target as” to download the full files. The are large at about 40MB but I am sure you will be not be disappointed but rather impressed, even for the sake of background music.
